Paragon Music Magazine: Life Is Killing
Me, the brand new album, has a lot of different musical influences in it. What was the driving force behind this album? Did you guys have fun creating it?
Johnny: Peter didn't want to do another record that dealt with so many personal issues. WCD was a real painful record for him and he wanted this cd not to be as bleak and hopeless. There were times when the process was a lot of fun but making a Type O cd is a lot of stress and tolerance.
PMM: Where will the tour for this album take you? Are you going to play large venues this time around, or have big-name bands to support you?
Johnny: I'm not sure what's going to happen. Were going to Europe next week for some festivals and club dates in between them. Were going to tour in the States when we get back from Europe. All the venues so far are larger clubs. Were going to see how well that does before we start thinking about playing larger places. We haven't been on tour in a long time so we don't want to get ahead of ourselves.
PMM:
What do you personally prefer playing, the large arenas, or the small clubs?
Johnny: I like the smaller clubs because the environment seems more intimate and intense.
PMM:
I have to ask....Is the contract with RoadRunner Records complete, and if so, where does Type O Negative go from here?
Johnny: LIKM fulfills our contract with Roadrunner. What's going to happen next is anyone's guess. We haven't really started with that stuff yet. We've been trying to keep our focus on finishing the new cd. We want to sign a new deal to keep going with Type O Negative. Were going to end up someplace though.
PMM:
You had the opportunity to go on tour and be the drummer for Danzig. How was that? Are you going to fill that role again, or was that a one-time gig?
Johnny: I played with Danzig again a month ago for a couple of shows in L.A. and Phoenix. Playing with Danzig is a blast. I have a great time playing in his band. Im a fan of his music and he's a great guy. I would love to continue to play with him. Its going to be tough now that Type O has started up again but we'll see what can be worked out regarding the schedules of both bands.
PMM:
Peter is always saying in interviews that he writes lyrics about how he feels, or things from his past, etc. Do you, or anyone else in the band for that matter, have any say in what lyrics are used, and do you guys contribute at all?
Johnny: It all depends on how strongly he feels about a particular lyric. Most of the time, we don't get in the way of his lyrics. We'll say something to him if we feel that he could do something better than what is there. He's sometimes open to it and sometimes he isn't.
PMM:
We know you guys are in this for fun, and most of the time you can see that the songs aren't meant to be very serious, but when you break it down, how seriously does the band really take its music, and how seriously should the fans take you, since you almost always have some underlying comedy in your songs?
Johnny: I take what I do seriously but not necessarily how I go about it. You cant take yourself too seriously in this environment. We have a very sarcastic sense of humor and we do like to laugh a lot. There has always been that dry, dark humor on every cd. We have always viewed Type O Negative as a tragic comedy.
PMM:
The After Dark DVD commentary was hilarious! Will you guys be putting out any other videos?
Johnny: We're shooting a video for the song "I Don't Want To Be Me" next weekend. We want to make another home video but I'm not sure when or what footage we're going to use.
PMM:
Josh, Kenny, and yourself have families and children to take care of now. Does that get in the way of your careers at all, especially when it comes to touring?
Johnny: Of course they're going to get in the way of each other but we're going to have to learn how to make both coexist. This is what I do for a living and this is how the bills get paid in my house. It is really going to suck to be away from my family but I think that I'm doing what's best for them by working as hard as I can while the opportunity is there.
PMM:
What is your favorite song to play live, and is there any song(s) that you guys don't have on your set list that you would love to include?
Johnny: There are many songs that I like to play live. I like the ones that have lots of dynamics and that go to different places. Songs like World Coming Down or Pain. I would've liked to have tried "Red Water" but I know that Peter would never play that one live.
PMM:
Answer this one honestly: Pete gets all the credit of being the hot one, what with his massive build and all, but when it comes down to it, who gets more women out of the whole band, who do the groupies throw themselves at?
Johnny: Peter
PMM:
What does the band think of groupies in general?
Johnny: If everyone is having a good time, then it's fine with me.
PMM:
Here's a request----Type O Negative should do a cover of the song "Sad Lisa" by Cat Stevens, just so Lisa can hear Peter say her name...heheh
Johnny: Ill pass it along.
PMM: Alright, back to the more serious questions-----Pete likes vitamins....do you?
Johnny: I wish that I was a little more disciplined regarding them and took them more often.
PMM:
Are you happy being in a band and working in the music business? Is there anything you would change about the way the business works, if you could?
Johnny: It's what I wanted to do my whole life. I think that the thing I would change is to try to get everyone to work towards the same goals instead of contending with whose greediness is more important.
PMM:
If you weren't in Type O Negative, what do you think you would be doing?
Johnny: I'd be playing drums in another band but Id probably have a different hair cut...
